12 Birth Month Flowers: A Watercolor Guide to Your Bloom

There is something so special about a flower that was chosen just for you before you even took your first breath. Long before birthstones became a thing, birth month flowers were already telling our stories, one bloom at a time.
I have always been captivated by this idea. Every month carries its own flower, its own personality, its own quiet meaning. And as a watercolor artist, I cannot think of anything more meaningful to paint than a symbol that belongs so personally to someone.
So grab a cup of tea, get cozy, and let me walk you through all 12 birth-month flowers. Maybe you will find yours. Maybe you will find someone you love. Either way, I think you will fall for these blooms just like I did.

January: Carnation
Carnations are ruffled, romantic, and surprisingly resilient, much like the January babies I know. This bloom represents love, fascination, and distinction. A perfect little burst of color for the coldest month of the year.

February: Violet
Sweet, humble, and utterly charming, violets are one of my absolute favorite flowers to paint. They symbolize loyalty and faithfulness, and there is something so nostalgic about their soft purple petals. February babies get such a lovely little bloom.

March: Daffodil
Daffodils are pure sunshine on a stem. They represent new beginnings and rebirth, which feels just right for a flower that arrives right as winter starts to loosen its grip. Painting daffodils always makes my studio feel a little brighter.

April: Daisy
Daisies are cheerful, innocent, and effortlessly happy. They symbolize purity and new beginnings, and honestly, who does not smile a little when they see a daisy? April babies get one of the most joyful blooms of the bunch.

May: Lily of the Valley
Delicate little bells that represent sweetness and humility, lily of the valley is one of the most romantic flowers I have ever painted. It is dainty, it is fragrant, and it carries such old-world charm.

June: Rose
The rose needs no introduction. Timeless, elegant, and endlessly symbolic of love, June babies are lucky to claim this classic beauty as their own. I love painting roses in every shade, from blush pink to deep red.

July: Delphinium
Delphinium is tall, whimsical, and full of personality, much like the vibrant blooms that fill my garden here in Ohio in the middle of summer. With its striking spires of blue, it represents an open heart and strong bonds of love.

August: Gladiolus
Bold, dramatic, and full of strength, the gladiolus represents integrity and moral character. This tall, showstopping bloom is a favorite for its architectural beauty and rich, saturated colors.

September: Aster
Asters are the flower of wisdom and a symbol of love and patience. With their star shaped petals, they bring such a lovely pop of color as the garden begins to shift into fall. Fitting, since September is when I start pulling out my sweaters and thinking about mums.

October: Cosmos
Cosmos flowers are airy, whimsical, and full of charm, representing order and harmony amidst their delicate, wispy petals. Their soft movement in the breeze feels like a little celebration of the season, and they are such a joy to paint with all their fine, feathery detail.

November: Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum symbolizes joy and optimism, and it is one of the most beloved flowers of the fall season. With so many petal shapes and colors to choose from, mums are endlessly fun to paint.

December: Narcissus (Paperwhite)
Narcissus flowers represent hope and wishes for happiness, making them such a sweet choice to close out the year. Their delicate white petals feel like a little breath of winter magic.
A Flower For Every Story
What I love most about birth month flowers is how personal they feel. They are not just pretty blooms, they are tiny symbols tied to the people we love most. A birthday gift, a baby shower, a sweet note tucked into an envelope, these flowers carry meaning far beyond their petals.
I have hand-painted each of these birth month flowers in watercolor, and they now live in my shop as original art prints, ready to bring a little piece of someone special into your home. Whether you are decorating a nursery, gifting a birthday surprise, or simply adding a bit of sunshine to your own space, there is a bloom waiting for you.
Wherever your flower-loving heart goes, I hope it finds a little color along the way.
xoxo, Michelle
